Modernization for the Cloud

challenge

Cargill Corporation is the world’s leading supplier of products and services to the global agriculture industry. Risk management across commodities, industries, and geographies is at the core of Cargill’s services. Cargill Risk Management provides financial solutions for customers to better manage the most volatile cost components of physical contracts. Utilizing these programs, customers have access to experts who know their business objectives as well as they know the global commodities markets.

Since 1994, customers have relied on Cargill Risk Management’s tailored solutions, customized for pricing needs, volumes and market bias. Today, Cargill is a provider of customized commodity price risk solutions for customers around the world, including producers and consumers of commodities in more than 60 countries, as well as institutional investors seeking exposure to these markets. In order to better serve their customers, Cargill was looking for a partner to help them transform the platform currently in place to a cloud first, modern technology platform.

Cargill envisioned a system that would:

  • Improve the overall quality of market and performance data
  • Enable and facilitate markets
  • Provide a better customer experience
  • Reduce administrative costs
  • Improve access to pricing tools

solution

To refine and then implement this ambitious vision, Cargill Risk Management needed a partner with extensive enterprise development experience as well as a commitment to excellence. Ultimately, Cargill selected sdg to be their lead technology consulting vendor on this initiative. sdg provided strategic guidance throughout the planning phase, identified both business and technical requirements, collaborated with Cargill to prototype and envision a modern user experience, and offered detailed enterprise architecture and technology recommendations. Then, sdg guided the complete software development process through implementation, beginning with creating an Agile mindset amongst Cargill employees.

Additionally, sdg oversaw system development and configuration, coordinated deployments, and implemented mature product management and software development practices. The first phase of the project focused on North America Energy markets and received a great reception at launch, exceeding expectations from the original vision. Going forward, Cargill Risk Management is positioned to extend the platform to serve additional customers and markets leveraging the foundational components sdg partnered with them to put in place.

sdg consultants partnered with Cargill in the following roles:

  • Agile project delivery and management
  • Product and Program management
  • Design, UX and Prototyping
  • Enterprise architecture and application development
  • Consultation on long-term product management and operational strategies
  • Digital operations best practices
